All of the recent festivities are now a memory and we are faced with the reality of the seemingly never-ending month of January!
The nights are long, the weather cold and the bank balance pretty low. It is also the time of year when we look to do new things and improve on the previous year.
I have been running informally for around eight years now, after first signing up to the London Marathon via my charity. Over the years, it has served me really well and has helped me improve personally and professionally massively.
How, why and is it for everyone?
Running may not be ideal for everyone and there are those people who have dodgy knees etc. However, in general, it is the most flexible and adaptable sport there is. It allows us to set PERSONAL goals, whether that be 1 mile, 2 runs a week, a quick jog at lunchtime etc.
It can also be done almost anywhere and at any time. Ok, I am not advocating a midnight run in an unknown location, but I have so many times discovered a city via a thirty minute run.
Although running is solitary, it can also be a good way of meeting people and having new experiences of different places and environments.
As well as physically, the mental side has proved just as important to me. I certainly know that I will never win a race but that is not the point of running. It is simply me against the road and it allows me from time to time to escape reality and destress before or after a hard day. I would also recommend sometimes running without a phone or music. Of course, everyone is different but without this, you are uncontactable and free!
Ultimately, it doesn’t need to be running but there are so many people I have met who have gained so much from this sport, even when they thought that their sporting days were over!
Do take care, wear proper shoes and fluorescent clothing etc. Although running is very safe, never overdo it or take unnecessary risks.
I could go on and on but if I can help with any informal advice it would be a pleasure to do so.
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2020
