It is a saturated market, everything is on line and people can only apply for jobs through company portals. Or so the logic goes.
The reality is actually a little different. How can people break into the hospitality market with no experience? How can great candidates find an opportunity in their dream hotel or even change their career focus a little?
People supposedly try and don’t succeed and they don’t feel that they can do much more on this!
So what else can they do, if anything? The answer is quite simple: Be proactive and have a plan!!
On the proactive side, don’t wait for an online portal to come back to you but pick up the phone and call HR. Visit the hotel and ask to see the front office manager of HR manager. Explain why you would like to work in that hotel and what you can bring to the company. Focus on your skills, attitude, passion and understanding of the role rather than piecing together some experience you don’t have. It may not work every time but it will put you way ahead of the competition and will definitely bring you some success.
As for a plan, perhaps it is unrealistic to try to find a role in your dream hotel straight away, so what are the steps needed to get there. Like a game of chess, plan your career strategically.
If you are lucky, you can also try to work with a great recruiter who will support and advise you with this, even if you are not discussing a specific role. Here at Worldy People, we have supported many good people change careers and find positions within hotels. Sometimes, not even through us but it is always nice to help people grow their careers.
What advice would you give to an aspiring hospitality professional?
